Description
Redisham Hall is a mansion built in 1823 for John Garden, and significantly altered in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was considerably enlarged and entirely refaced around 1880 for John Lewis Garden, with further additions in 1904 by Thomas De la Garde Grissell. The upper floor of the north wing was rebuilt around 1955. The building is constructed of red brick with a first-floor band, a moulded dentil eaves cornice, and a flat parapet; it has a slated roof. The two-storey main block has seven windows, with the central three bays slightly projecting, featuring inset sash windows with glazing bars and moulded brick surrounds. Segmental-headed tripartite windows flank the entrance. Many ground-floor windows are set high to accommodate a basement floor. An early 20th-century brick entrance porch has stone clasping pilasters and a bracketed segmental hood, supporting a two-leaf entrance door reached by a flight of steps. Above the doorway is a coat of arms displaying the motto 'Press Forward'. The rear has nine bays; the original house form is visible in the five centre bays, marked by a mansard roof and five pedimented dormers. French windows open onto a terrace with wrought iron railings dated 1905. To the south, various outbuildings are attached, including a coachman’s house and a single-storey stable block that curves around to the rear. Inside, the original entrance hall features a vaulted ceiling and five semi-circular arched openings, two of which are blind. A good stone staircase has a wrought iron balustrade and a wreathed mahogany handrail. The dining room is distinguished by a modillion-corniced ceiling. The north wing's ballroom, dating to around 1900, has a barrel-vaulted ceiling enriched with a lozenge grid and bands of plasterwork featuring foliage and flowers; a section of a convex frieze remains.
