Description
Mills Farmhouse is an early 17th-century farmhouse that was extended and restored in the early 20th century. The original timber frame is visible; the ground floor is faced with red brick, and the first floor is tile-hung. The roof is pantiled. The building has two storeys and an attic, and originally had a two-cell plan, later extended to three cells with a lobby entry. It features reproduction casement windows with diamond-leaded glass, and some incorporate reused panels of stained glass. A 20th-century brick porch has a plank door, panelled on the outer face, which may be the original door, a rare survival on a farmhouse. The porch's side windows contain ovolo-moulded mullions, likely taken from elsewhere within the house. An internal sawtooth stack is present. Original ovolo-moulded mullion windows remain to the rear. Ground floor rooms have ovolo-moulded bridging beams and cornice, while the hall has exposed, similarly-moulded joists. C17 panelling is found against the end wall of the hall, with each panel featuring a sunk lozenge. The parlour and the room above it both have fireplaces with moulded stucco arches, and some exposed studding is visible. Original newel stairs, consisting of two flights, are present. The roof structure incorporates two rows of butt purlins and cranked wind-bracing.
