Description

Shelley Dairy is a house that has been built in several stages, dating from the 16th or 17th century or earlier, with later alterations and additions. The front facade is made of 19th century gault brick, which covers a timber-framed and plastered structure, along with a crosswing. The roofs are covered with red plain tiles, hipped on the left side and hipped with a gablet on the right. There are two gault brick chimney stacks on the ridge, with external red brick stacks on the right and left returns, and a large external stack with two attached square shafts at the rear right. The house features a crosswing to the left, a central gabled stair turret at the rear, and an additional range to the rear right with a roof that is hipped to the right and gabled to the left. It has two storeys and a single-storey extension on the left return. The front has a four-window range, primarily consisting of 19th century casements with transoms, as well as two ground floor angled bays topped with red tiled roofs. Flanking the two-panel, two-light door and the window above are two-storey gault pilasters, which have bases, capitals, and a frieze band, along with a flat canopy. Inside, the timber frame is mostly hidden by 20th century decorations, but some features are visible, including the ground cills, some side girts, the top plates, and stop-chamfered bridging joists. At the time of the re-survey, there was no access to the right wing.
