Description
Shelley Lodge is a cottage that dates back to the 15th century or earlier, with later alterations and additions. It is constructed from timber framing and plaster, topped with red plain tiled roofs. The building features two chimney stacks at the rear, one located off-centre on the right ridge and another as a left external stack with three square attached shafts.
The cottage is two storeys high and has central gables at both the front and rear, with a rear outshot extension. Each gable is fitted with two-light small paned casements on both the ground and first floors. The ground floor on the left return has shutters below the transom, and the gable jetties out, supported by four brackets. To the right of the gable, there is an outshot porch with a vertically boarded door.
The interior has a complex plan, featuring an inglenook fireplace with jowled storey posts and arched braces supporting the main frame and tie beam. Part of the roof includes collars for every rafter pair, although full access to the roof was not available during the last survey. The cottage retains original vertically boarded doors and some vertically boarded walls. Adjacent to the ground floor fireplace, there is a solid brace supporting the ceiling beam.
