Description
Spring Cottage is a cottage dating from the 15th or 16th century, with later alterations and additions. It is constructed from timber framing and weatherboarding, topped with a thatched roof. There is a red brick chimney stack on the left side. The building features single-storey lean-to extensions on the left, right, and rear. It has one storey and attics, with a gabled dormer. To the right of the 20th-century gabled porch are two small paned casement windows, and a similar window is found on the left lean-to, along with a stable door on the right lean-to.
Inside, part of the timber frame is visible, showcasing closely set studs, side girts, and top plates. The ceilings have been inserted and feature stop-chamfered bridging joists. There is a repaired inglenook fireplace that has been inserted. The inner tie beams have been cut away, and the upper part of the roof structure is now boarded, making it impossible to determine if it is constructed with side purlins or a crown post. The current owners have sandblasted the rafters to remove what they describe as "black rough material," possibly soot.
