Description
Giffords Hall, located in Stoke-by-Nayland, is a Grade I listed building that was originally associated with the Mannock family, who held the manor from 1428. The house primarily dates from the early 16th century but includes remnants of an earlier structure. It underwent some alterations and additions in the early 18th century and late 19th century.
This timber-framed house is arranged around a quadrangular courtyard, featuring a two-storey red brick gatehouse on the south side and a great hall on the north. The outer front of the gatehouse showcases angle turrets, stepped battlements, and brick pinnacles. The windows are designed with 4-centred heads, and there is a 4-centred arch with blank tracery in the spandrels, complemented by a frieze with cusped tracery above. The courtyard front displays three stepped gables. Inside the great hall, there is a remarkable double-hammerbeam roof with carved arched braces and spandrels, along with a late 17th-century minstrel's gallery featuring twisted balusters.
