Description
The War Memorial in Bures St Mary, dating from around 1920, features a stone pedestal with a wooden cross. The memorial takes the form of a wayside cross, standing on a stepped octagonal base with canted corners and two sloping panels at the angles. The wooden cross is octagonal in shape and has a sword carved in relief on its front, with a carved laurel wreath connecting the angles of the cross. The upper arms of the cross support a moulded gabled cover, which has cusping at the apex on both the front and back, topped with a shingled roof. Inscriptions on the pedestal list the names of those who fell in the First World War, while the sloping panels display the names of those who fell in the Second World War. This memorial, made from a distinctive combination of wood and stone, is part of a notable group alongside the Church of the Virgin Mary and other nearby buildings.
