Description
The Haughley War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, with a later addition for the Second World War. It was restored in the mid-20th century and is located prominently in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary the Virgin, which is a Grade I listed building.
The memorial is made from Clipsham stone and features a Calvary cross flanked by carved mourning figures, likely representing the Virgin Mary and the disciple John, positioned on base spurs on the shaft. This is set on a two-stepped octagonal plinth and a single-stepped octagonal base. The main dedicatory inscription on the upper part of the plinth reads: "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE" on the south-west face. Below this, the dates "1914–1918" and "1939–1945" are inscribed along with the names of the fallen.
The side and rear faces of the octagonal plinth are adorned with relief-carved heraldic shields.
