Description
No. 1 Duke Street is a house dating from the late 17th century, with an earlier core. It has a three-cell plan and is two storeys high. The structure is timber-framed and plastered, topped with a Roman pantiled roof that was once thatched. There is an axial chimney featuring a rebuilt 19th-century shaft made of red and gault brick, along with a 19th-century end chimney on the right side. The windows are mainly 19th-century small-pane casements, with some replaced in the 20th century. The entrance to the house is on the left, featuring a 19th-century door with six fielded panels, and there is a 20th-century partly-glazed panelled door at the lobby-entrance position.
The house underwent significant rebuilding in the late 17th century or early 18th century but likely originated as a medieval house with alterations from the mid-16th century. To the left is a service cell that retains heavy unchamfered medieval joists. The central hall has small on-edge joists typical of around 1700. There is a large axial chimney with an open fireplace in the hall, and behind it is a parlour cell that features well-crafted roll-and-cavetto moulded beams and joists of mid-16th century style. However, all the studwork is primary-braced, indicating that the house was virtually reconstructed around 1700.
