Description
Numbers 6 and 7 Duke Street and Numbers 2 (The Post Office) and 4 The Green are four houses and a Post Office, believed to have been built as almshouses around 1870 to 1890. The building is constructed of red brick with gault brick dressings that form block quoining. It features hipped roofs covered with plain tiles, and above the Post Office, there is a large diamond shape made of red and black fishscale tiles, with sections of fishscale tiling also present on the Duke Street elevation. The building has axial chimneys made of red brick and stands two storeys tall. There is a three-window range facing The Green and a six-window range along Duke Street. The windows are primarily composed of two lights with cambered heads, featuring voussoirs made alternately of three red bricks and three gault bricks. The cast iron casements have diamond panes bordered by oblong panes. Various panelled doors are present, most of which were renewed in the 20th century. This building is included for its group value.
