Description
Vauxhall is a house dating from around 1500, constructed with a timber frame and plastered exterior, topped with a red plain tiled roof and featuring a large off-centre red brick chimney stack. The building has two storeys and attics, and its long structure includes two windows on both the first and ground floors, along with a central 20th-century gabled porch. All windows are 20th-century three-light casements with transoms, and there is an attic window on the return. The rear of the house has a restored range of 18th and 19th-century red brick windows, along with a gabled 20th-century porch.
Inside, the large back-to-back inglenook fireplaces are blocked, but one large cambered mantel beam remains exposed. The ceilings feature coved cornices, flat section ceiling beams, and stop-chamfered bridging joists. The building has jowled storey posts on both floors, and the tie beams were originally arched braced with three pegs. The wall studs are closely set, and there is a blocked original window. The top plate has a halved and bridled scarf joint, and the roof is supported by side purlins with heavy cambered collars. The house is situated on a moated site. Historically, the Manor and Advowson of Great Wenham were held by the Vaux family and later appropriated to Leigh Priory in Essex, as noted in White's "Directory of Suffolk" from 1844.
