Description

Wood Farmhouse is a 15th-century farmhouse with a timber-framed core, which was extended around 1600 and later encased in brick, with further extensions in the 19th century. It features plain tile roofs and is built in a T-plan layout, consisting of a hall range with a central forward gabled wing. The building has a scattered arrangement of windows, including 2 and 3-light casements with diamond leaded glazing. The gabled wing includes a ground floor bay with cross casements and a first floor casement beneath a hoodmould. There is a brick porch with a tile roof located at the right-hand angle of the wing and main range, likely where the original door was situated, leading to a panelled door. The farmhouse has brick stacks with shaped shafts and oversailing caps, with one stack positioned axially behind the doorway, another externally on the left-hand gable, and a third to the left of the 19th-century wing.

At the rear, there are remains of pargetting and iron casements with pintle hinges. Inside, there is a massive arch-braced cambered tie beam that supports the former two-bay hall, which is now floored. The ceiling features a deep chamfered bridging beam and chamfered joists, which may have been roll moulded in the past. There is a doorway located at the rear of the stack and a pair of opposed doorways at the opposite end of the hall, though there is no evidence of a passage leading to the present service range beyond. A 19th-century stair is positioned against the stack, and there is no access to the roof. The right-hand bay displays lambs tongue stops.
