Description
Birch House Farmhouse is a house dating from the early 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the 18th century and later. It is timber-framed, rendered, and has plain tile roofs, with a brick plinth and underpinning. The building has two and two-and-a-half storeys and originally consisted of four cells, having been extended to the east in the 18th century.
On the north face, there are 20th-century small paned casements, with six on the ground floor and four on the first floor. The ground floor windows are single 2-light casements, while the first-floor windows are 2-light casements. The rear (south) side features six assorted first-floor casements, mostly from the 20th century, including some with diamond leaded panes and one horizontal sliding sash. The ground floor has a mix of 20th-century single, 2-light, and 3-light casements. The porch, door, and window were added in the 1960s, and the returns have various 20th-century openings. There is an external stack on the south wall and an axial stack set off the ridge. Some cable pattern pargetting is visible, although part of it is now internal.
Inside, there is a blocked doorway to the hall and remains of a shutter slide to a window. The interior features stop-chamfered, roughly cut transverse beams. The brickwork of the stack dates from the 17th century but has been somewhat altered. There is a blocked front right-hand 4-light diamond mullion window and another one at the rear against the stack, both on the first floor. The first-floor gable end has a shutter, and the roof has altered clasped purlins.
