Description

The Church of All Saints is a parish church dating back to the early 14th century, with later additions and alterations. It is constructed primarily of flint with stone and brick dressings, some parts rendered, and has plain tile roofs. The church comprises a west tower, nave, a south porch, a chancel, and a south vestry.

The west tower is from the 14th century, but its height was reduced and it was substantially repaired in 1772. It features flint and stone diagonal buttresses and plinths, with a largely brick west front in English bond. A 2-light 19th-century window in a Decorated style is set within a larger opening, revealing earlier brickwork. A brick arched bell opening, a small stair window, and other openings are found in the north and south walls of the tower.

The nave has a rendered south wall with a diagonal buttress. It contains two 2-light windows; one is in a Decorated style with Y-tracery and a simple hoodmould, while the other is a 19th-century Perpendicular style window with cusped tracery. A 19th or later porch provides access on the south side, featuring a two-order chamfered doorway that runs into roll mouldings over the arch, with a moulded hood. The north wall features two 2-light windows: one is in a 19th-century Decorated style with Y-tracery, and the other is Perpendicular with animal stops to the hoodmould. There is also a simple chamfered doorway on the north side, along with a projecting rood stair. Buttresses of stone, flint and brick flank the north wall, with the brick elements partly from the 16th century.

The chancel is constructed of flint cobbles and has diagonal buttresses. The east window is a 3-light Perpendicular style window from the 19th century. The south side contains two 2-light windows, one in a Decorated style and the other in a Perpendicular style. A similar Perpendicular window is on the north side. A blocked doorway, filled with a basket-head brick arch in English bond brickwork, and a brick-filled rectangular opening with chamfered stone reveals are also visible.

Inside, a tall, simple chamfered arch leads to the tower, clipped by the nave ceiling. A vestigial chancel arch remains. The interior also includes a simple arched piscina and sedilia. Most of the furnishings date to the 19th century, including an ornate communion rail with annulated shafts. Two 17th-century stone wall tablets are present; one is a rectangular monument with a scrolled apron, a skull beneath, skull finials and grape drops to each side of a blank panel; the other is similar with drop finials in the form of grapes, skull finials, and garlands, possibly of figs, to the sides of an illegible panel. A brass memorial commemorates Marie Revers, who died on 11th September 1592, along with a brass depicting her family (three sons and seven daughters). An octagonal poor box is also present.
