Description
The Orchards is a timber-framed house, originally dating to the late 16th century, with later alterations in the 18th century and partial rebuilding in the 20th century. It is constructed with timber framing, rendered on the front, and extended to the left and rear with brick in the 18th century, all covered by plain tile roofs. The house comprises four cells, originally three in number. An axial stack is located between the second and third cells of the original build, and a gable end stack is situated to the left. The house is of 1½ storeys. A partly glazed door is positioned on the far right, with a single light window to its right and a small, multi-paned two-leaf casement window to its left. A roughly central door is located within a brick porch, flanked by three-light casement windows on either side. The brick wing features a 20th-century two-light casement window. Four dormers, each with a two-light timber casement and plain tile roof, are visible. Internally, the house contains bar-stopped transverse beams and horizontal joists. An earlier small first-floor window was blocked, and pargetting is said to have existed on the former left-hand gable. A partial internal inspection was possible.
