Description

Little Wenham Hall Farmhouse is a house that dates back to the 16th century, with a double range extension added in the 18th century, and a porch from the 19th or 20th century. The building is timber framed and plastered, featuring red plain tiled roofs that are hipped on the 18th century double range and the right side of the main range, while the 19th century porch has a gabled roof. The rear face of the house displays 19th and 20th century batten decoration, except for the 18th century range which is plastered. There are two gabled wings at the back facing west towards the moat; the southern wing is from the 19th century and the northern wing is likely original.

The house has red brick chimney stacks located off-centre on the right side of the main range, at the ridge of the 19th century west range, and south of the 18th century range. It is two storeys high, with two first floor windows on the right and five ground floor windows, mainly 19th and 20th century vertically sliding sashes with horns. The west face includes various 20th century small paned vari-light casements. The 19th century east porch features a three-light first floor window, a four-centred outer arch, and mullions on the returns, with a reproduction door from the same period.

Inside, most of the frame is concealed. There is a large chimney stack with later fire surrounds, and the rooms next to the chimney stack have heavy chamfered bridging joists. The top plates are visible beneath the decorations, including those in the small west wing, which may have been a stair turret or porch. The house has jowled storey posts, and the roof bays to the south of the chimney stack exhibit 16th century arch braced side purlin construction, pegged at the ridge with intermittent collars. The northern bays and the 18th century range were not inspected during the re-survey, but there is a cast iron hobgrate from the 18th century in the bedroom fireplace of this range, and the northern entrance door is made of four vertical boards and is nailed.
