Description

Scott's Cottage is a house dating to around 1600, situated in Pebmarsh. It is constructed with a timber frame, which has been plastered, and originally had a thatched roof. The house has four bays facing northeast, with a central chimney stack. Later additions include a 19th-century and 20th-century lean-to extension to the left, roofed with red clay pantiles and corrugated plastic, and a weatherboarded shed with a lean-to roof of red clay pantiles at the right end. The cottage is one storey high, with attics. The front elevation features one 19th-century horizontally sliding sash window with twelve panes, two 20th-century casement windows, and a 20th-century lean-to porch with a side entrance. Inside, you can see chamfered beams with run-out stops and plain horizontal joists. The right bay has joists arranged longitudinally, supported by pegged clamps. The chimney stack is from the 18th century and likely replaced an earlier timber-framed chimney in the same position. Originally a single-storey building, floors were inserted during the first half of the 17th century. The roof is a clasped purlin construction with straight wind bracing.
