Description

Gainsborough, Chelmesis and Inglenook is a house that has been divided into three sections. It dates from the early to mid 16th century and is timber framed, with some parts rendered and a rendered brick plinth. The roof is hipped and gable-ended, covered with plain tiles. There is a stack located to the right of the centre and at the front of the ridge, made of 19th or 20th century brickwork. The building has two storeys and is likely a former open hall house.

The Gainsborough section features a part-glazed door with a vertical light to the left, and a 4-pane casement window above. The left-hand return has a first-floor 18th-century timber casement window with original fittings. The Chelmesis section has a boarded door with a 20th-century small paned window that includes an upper hung light, and a 4-pane casement window above. There is also a small 4-pane window on the ground floor to the right. The far right section has a 20th-century small paned casement window, similar to the central bay, with a matching small pane casement window above. There is a flat-roofed extension to the right that includes a 20th-century door. Part of the first-floor framing is exposed, showcasing a heavy jowled corner post. The interior of the Gainsborough section was inspected, but the frame is covered over.
