Description
Ashwellthorpe war memorial is situated on a village green next to All Saint’s churchyard, prominently located near the entrance to the churchyard. The memorial features an elegant Cross of Sacrifice style head on an octagonal shaft with a moulded lower section, which stands on an octagonal plinth that also has a moulded lower section and displays inscriptions. This is supported by a two-stepped square base. The entire structure is surrounded by a paved area that is enclosed by a set of low posts with chains.
The octagonal plinth has carved relief lettering around the top, dedicating it to the First World War. The names of the fallen are incised on three of the faces and filled in with black. The inscription around the top of the plinth reads: "IN MEMORY OF THE ASHWELL THORPE MEN WHO FELL IN THE WAR 1914 – 1919." One face lists five names from the First World War, another face lists five more First World War names, and a third face includes two names from the Second World War.
