Description

The Church of St Nicholas is a Grade I listed building located in Ashwellthorpe on Ship's Lane. It features a central tower dating from the 12th century, which includes original small windows on the north and south sides. The bell openings are in the Early English style, showcasing two pointed lights beneath a single round arch. The church comprises a chancel and nave, with a Norman south doorway that has one order of shafts topped with volute capitals. The Early English north doorway is adorned with arch mouldings, and there is a 19th-century north porch. The building underwent significant restoration in 1869 and is constructed from flint rubble with stone dressings, topped with machine tile roofs. Inside, there is a 15th-century screen, with only the coving that supports the roof loft remaining, along with traces of painting. The 15th-century font features an octagonal bowl with foiled side panels, alternating sides with plain shields, and a stem supported by four shafts with foiled arched panels between, depicting angels holding shields.
