Description
Ashwell’s war memorial is located east of the main village at the junction of Lucas Lane and Station Road. It features a standard Lutyens War Cross made of Portland stone, which is uniquely set on a square podium that stands on two circular steps instead of the usual three.
The memorial includes several inscriptions. On the front (east) side, it reads: "IN HONOUR OF THE MEN OF/ ASHWELL WHO FOUGHT IN THE/ GREAT WAR AND IN LOVING/ MEMORY OF THOSE WHO FELL/ OUR GLORIOUS DEAD/ (NAMES)/ THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE." The south side is inscribed with "1914 (NAMES)," while the north side has "1919 (NAMES)." The names of those who died in the Second World War are also engraved on the podium.
The memorial is approached by a flight of six steps, which are contemporary with and integral to the structure. The ground in front of the memorial is retained by a kerb.
