Description

Hill Cottages is a former farmhouse that has been converted into three cottages, now functioning as a single dwelling. It dates from the late 16th century and has undergone later modifications. The building features a rendered timber frame, faced with colour-washed brick on the front and sides, and is topped with a thatched roof. It stands two storeys high with an attic and consists of five bays, each with 20th-century two-light casements that have horizontal glazing bars, set under skewback arches with cambered soffits at the ground floor. The rear displays scattered fenestration with 20th-century diamond mullions. There is an off-centre axial stack with a blocked doorway opposite, as well as a later external gable-end stack. The roof includes three eyebrow dormers and the entrance side of the stack features a winding stair with a facetted newel. Surviving service doors can be found at the northern end, leading to what was likely a former through passage. The first floor on the north side of the stack was originally open to a queen post roof, with evidence of three trusses. The current roof, dating from the 18th century, has staggered wedge-tenoned butt-purlins, and the original timbers are of heavy scantling with stepped stops.
