SAXLINGHAM NETHERGATE CHURCH HILL Hill Cottages

Former farmhouse, converted into three cottages, now single dwelling. Late C16 and later. Rendered timber frame faced with colour-washed brick to front and sides. Thatched roof. Two storeys with attic. Five bays of C20 two-light casements with horizontal glazing bars under skewback arches with cambered soffits at ground floor. Scattered fenestration to rear with C20 diamond mullions. Off-centre axial stack with blocked doorway opposite and one later external gable-end stack. Three eyebrow dormers. Winding stair with facetted newel to entrance side of stack. Surviving service doors to northern end onto a probable former through passage. To north side of stack first floor formerly open to queen post roof with evidence of three trusses. Present roof C18 with staggered wedge-tenoned butt-purlins. Original timbers of heavy scantling with stepped stops.
