Description
Orchard Cottage is a former farmhouse that has been converted into two cottages and is now a single dwelling. It dates from the 16th and 17th centuries, with later alterations. The building features a timber frame that has been partially refaced in the 17th century with brickwork arranged in a diaper pattern. It has a pantiled roof and stands two storeys high, with a small attic room located to the south.
The east facade showcases two late 16th century two-light diamond mullion windows, one of which was originally a four-light window. There is a window with empty diamond mullion mortices and a 17th century four-light ovolo-moulded mullion window with chamfered brick reveals. Additionally, there are four blocked pigeon niches beneath the eaves and shaped eaves sprockets.
The building has a 19th century extension on the side and a 20th century extension at the rear. It includes one off-centre axial stack and one later gable-end stack. Inside, the roof structure features clasped purlins with reduced principals, cambered collars, and wind bracing that can be seen in the single attic room.
