Description
Number 8 Market Place is a pair of shops, originally three, dating from the early 17th century, likely around 1616, and has been altered over time. The building is timber-framed with roofs covered in black glazed pantiles. It has two storeys and a dormer attic. The mid-19th century shop front features fluted corner pieces and door surrounds with plate glass display windows, which are separated by round stiles adorned with floral quadrant spandrels. This shop front extends into the north return on Bridewell Street. There is a blocked door to the right, which has an overlight with intersecting tracery, and a prominent fascia board. The first floor is plastered and colourwashed, with two sash windows that have glazing bars. The building has a bell-based gabled roof with one flat-topped dormer and an internal gable-end stack on the south side. There is a three-light attic casement on the north return. The timber-framed section continues down Bridewell Street, now part of the shop premises, featuring a 19th-century brick underbuilt jetty and a rendered first floor. The ground floor has three casements, with no openings on the floor above, and a gabled roof.
Inside, the frame includes straight braces at the corners and jowled principal studs, with the east end featuring arched corner braces. The section facing Bridewell Street has chamfered and sunk-quadrant bridging beams. The roof above consists of two tiers of staggered butt purlins and cambered collars, while the front roof range is similar, except the purlins are not staggered.
