Description

The Queen's Head Hotel is a public house located on Bridewell Street in Wymondham. It dates back to the early 17th century, likely around 1616, and originally consists of a single room depth, with various extensions added over time. The building was restored and altered in 1989. It features a timber-framed structure with black glazed pantiles on the front and concrete pantiles and corrugated tiles on the rear. The design includes a baffle-entry plan and is rendered and colourwashed.

The hotel has two storeys and a dormer attic, arranged in four irregular bays. There are two doorways, one of which is blocked. The front has three mid-19th century three-light cross casements, while the first floor has three three-light mid-19th century casements and one two-light casement, all with hoods on labels. The roof is bell-based and gabled, featuring two inserted gabled dormers. There are central and internal gable-end stacks from the 19th century, both with twin diamond flues.

At the rear, there is an early 19th century two-storey brick ballroom that extends south from the east end. Inside, the frame has thin scantling with a bressumer over the west fireplace that has sunk-quadrant mouldings. There is a roll-moulded bridging beam at the west end and other chamfered beams. The frame includes jowled principal studs with straight braces to tie beams, and one pair of arched braces. Corner tension braces are also present. The roof consists of two tiers of butt purlins and cambered collars. Most of the ballroom details were updated in 1989.
