Description
No. 34 The Close is a building that was formerly part of a brewhouse and is now a house. It dates from the 17th century, with 18th-century alterations, and incorporates elements of a medieval brewhouse. There is a single-storey front extension from the 19th century. The structure is built of flint with brick dressings and features stone dressings as well. The roof is made of pantiles, with the 19th-century extension also having a pantile roof. The building has an L-shaped plan and consists of two storeys plus an attic.
The façade includes a single gabled bay that projects, with two first-floor mullion and transom windows to the left. The left-hand off-centre door has a moulded surround and is located in the projecting bay. Above the door is a sash window with glazing bars, set in a blocked wider opening. The gable features a four-light mullion and transom window. There is one cross-dormer in the projecting bay and one hipped-roof dormer above the mullion and transom windows, which contains a two-light casement.
To the left of the projecting bay is a single-storey extension that has a sash window with glazing bars and side-lights, topped with a hipped roof. There is also an 18th-century two-storey extension to the north of the former brewhouse, consisting of one bay with a flint ground floor and a brick first floor. A medieval buttress is present at the junction of the 18th and 19th-century extensions, coinciding with stone quoins on the rear walls.
