Description
No. 49 The Close is a Grade II* house that originated as a single-storey block in the 14th or 15th century, later rebuilt and raised in the 16th and 17th centuries. The building is constructed of flint and brick, with some areas of brick blocking, and features a pantile roof. It stands two storeys high and has four irregularly spaced windows on the first floor. The left-hand, off-centre door is framed by fluted pilasters and a plain architrave with a band of guttae, topped by a small hood with a mutule. Above the door, there is a blocked niche. The ground floor has horizontal sash windows with vertical glazing bars set in brick reveals, while the first floor features one horizontal and three sash windows with vertical glazing bars. A brick saw-tooth cornice runs along the top, and there are two gabled dormers, each with three-light casements and decorative bargeboards.
