Description

The Norfolk and Norwich Hospital X-ray and Radiotherapy Departments, along with the former out-patients' accommodation, is a hospital building constructed in 1771 by William Ivory. It features a red brick exterior and a hipped pantile roof, forming an L-plan layout over two storeys. The facade has 13 first-floor windows arranged at right angles to the street.

A prominent central bay has rusticated brick quoins, a 20th-century glass door, and a flat porch in front of a plain fanlight set within a recessed round-headed gauged brick arch. The flanking windows also have similar arches. A plain brick string course runs along the building, with a higher stone band accentuating the central bays. The windows are sash style with glazing bars, positioned under flat gauged brick arches, and there are three round-headed first-floor windows beneath a central pediment featuring an oculus.

A brick cornice caps the structure. The left end of the ground floor is obscured by irregular 20th-century flat-roofed extensions. On the right side elevation facing the street, there is a two-storey canted bay. An adjoining range of two storeys and a semi-basement has seven first-floor windows, three of which are located in a projecting pedimented bay that includes rusticated quoins, a stone string course, and an oculus. The sash windows here also have glazing bars under flat gauged brick arches with keystones, and a stone eaves cornice completes the design.

A stone tablet with a bronze bust commemorates the foundation of the hospital in 1771 by William Fellowes and notes the reconstruction and enlargement of the out-patient department in 1927 as a memorial for the First World War.
