Description
The Norfolk and Norwich Hospital's Administrative Block and Main Hall is a hospital built in 1859 by E. Boardman, with Thomas Henry Wyatt as a consultant. It is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and features a plain tiled roof, along with two ridge brick clustered chimneys and additional chimneys at the rear. Designed in the Queen Anne Revival style, the building has two storeys and an attic, with a symmetrical arrangement of thirteen first-floor windows.
The central porte-cochere is notable for its balustraded stone parapet, which includes a central scrolled cartouche displaying the Royal Coat of Arms, flanked by Doric pilasters that alternate between brick and stone bands. The main facade features slightly projecting end wings, each with three windows. The first-floor bays are accentuated by pilasters, and there is a moulded brick string course and a stone band above the first-floor windows. A moulded cornice runs beneath the parapet, which is interrupted by two attic windows with stone pediments and three-shaped gables, each adorned with a window, stone dressings, and ball finials.
The segmental headed windows have glazing bars only in the top sash, with large panes below and gauged brick arches featuring key blocks. A central clock tower has a base made of alternating bands of stone and brick, with pediments above the clock face, topped by a cupola supported by six columns. There is also an octagonal tower of two storeys located at the rear.
