Description

Birkbeck Hall at The Great Hospital is a hall built in 1901 by E. Beardman, incorporating fragments of medieval fabric. The building is constructed of flint and red brick, featuring red brick dressings and stone details, with a pantile roof and two brick end chimneys. It has five bays defined by buttresses, with the south bay adjoining a passage arch of the Chaplain's House, which has a Tudor-style arch bearing the date 1901 in its spandrels. The hall is characterized by tall two-light mullioned and transomed windows and stepped brick gables. Notably, medieval masonry can be found in the buttresses on the east side. Inside, there is a mock inglenook fireplace at the north end and a smaller fireplace at the south end.
