Description

The Former Chaplain's House at The Great Hospital, originally built in the 15th century with later additions and remodelling, is now divided into 10 flats. The building features flint with brick dressings, rendered dormers, and a pantile roof, with three 19th-century brick ridge chimneys. It has two storeys and an attic, with ten first-floor windows.

The left section, known as Nos. 1-5, includes a six-panelled door with a plain overlight in a simple moulded doorcase, topped with a hood on consoles. This door is flanked by pairs of sash windows in flush-fronted wooden frames. There are two gabled dormers with sashes that have glazing bars and horns.

The right section, Nos. 6-10, features a six-panelled door and overlight with glazing bars in a simple moulded doorcase, accompanied by a small hood. This section has 16-pane windows set in 19th-century brickwork. There are two wide blocked window openings on the first floor with smaller sashes that have glazing bars, along with another small blocked window to the left. It also has two gabled dormers with sashes that have glazing bars and horns.

To the right, there is a carriage arch that includes one first-floor casement and 15th or 16th-century brick dressings at the rear. A steel bressummer is present at the front, and a non-framed casement at the rear has pale green glass. Additionally, there is a massive two-storey red brick extension from the 20th century at the rear. The right end of the Chaplain's House adjoins the entrance to Brikbeck Hall. The interior was not inspected during the re-survey.
