Description

The Refectory and part of the former Master's House at The Great Hospital is a Grade I listed building, dating from the 15th century and later. It features flint construction with brick dressings and a pantile roof, along with a rebuilt red brick end chimney on the right. The hall to the right has three two-light windows with transoms and Y tracery, indicating the former position of a side chimney.

On the left, there is a projecting 16th-century porch leading to the cross-passage, which has been refronted in 19th-century brick and includes diagonal buttresses. This porch features a first-floor window with Y tracery and a small wooden Tudor arch on the right side with decorated spandrels, along with a blocked window above. The gable-fronted cross-wing, also refronted in 19th-century brick and rendered above, has a two-light window on the ground floor and a three-light window on the first floor, both with leaded lights and intersecting tracery.

The rear elevation facing the cloister has two three-light perpendicular windows flanked by smaller 19th-century windows with Y tracery. Inside the refectory, there is a large chimney-breast adjacent to the north aisle of the infirmary hall, a gallery over the cross-passage, and a crown-post roof featuring dragons in the spandrels of the arch braces under the tie beam. The porch has roll-moulded ceiling beams, and the cross passage contains three four-centred arches (one blocked) with drip moulds for former services. There is also a moulded and stopped door-cask leading to the Master's office.
