Description
St Helen's House is a former house, now a nursing home, built in the 19th century with a 18th-century rear section. The building features red and grey brick with a black pantile roof and has a squat T-shaped plan. It is two storeys high, with a three-bay central block flanked by two-bay recessed wings on each side. The central bay is semi-circular and includes a central door with a rectangular fanlight, flanked by Doric columns that support a fluted architrave and a small hood. The central bay has three windows, and all windows throughout the building are sash windows with glazing bars and rubbed brick flat arches. The exterior is finished with a bracket cornice and hipped roofs, while the centre bay is topped with a conical lead roof.
Inside, the oval entrance hall features three curved doors and a cornice. There is a simple mahogany staircase that leads up to an oval fluted skylight. Above the hall is an oval room that contains a painting believed to be by Angelica Kauffmann. To the right is a music room with a painted domed ceiling and panels above the doors. To the left, another room has a coved ceiling with moulded Adam-style swags, although it had 20th-century partitions when inspected in February 1984.
