Description
Number 4, known as Brown's Hospital, features a chapel and hall built around 1480, with some rebuilding done in 1870 by J. Fowler. The building has a 15th-century chapel elevation facing Broad Street, showcasing a stone-stepped entrance to the porch at the west end and a hall on the first floor. It is two storeys high, constructed from coursed rubble with stone dressings, and consists of four bays separated by small buttresses. Each bay includes a ground floor window with one light and a first floor window with two lights, both set in a four-centred arch with mullions, transoms, and cusping. All windows have moulded labels. The two easternmost windows feature three and four lights, with a second transom and segmental arches. The most easterly window contains good contemporary glass. There is a modern extension at the east end. Inside, the almshouses have been completely rebuilt, facing a small court, and are designed in a late 19th-century Gothic style. The building is part of a group that includes No 1 with its railings and terrace, No 2 with its wall and gate, and Nos 3, 4, the Warden's House at No 4, and Nos 5 to 11 in succession.
