Description
The Warden's House to Browne's Hospital, built in 1671, is a late 19th-century structure attributed to architect J Fowler. It stands three storeys tall, constructed from coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and quoins. To the right, there is a two-storey oriel supported by a moulded bracket. Each storey features 10-light windows with stone mullions. A moulded band runs below the crenellated parapet, with a 2-light window in the gable above the oriel, complemented by a rectangular dripmould and a helm arrow-slit window. The gable is topped with a finial. The left-hand section is set back and includes a one-light window with a rectangular dripmould on two storeys, above a penticed pouch with a crocketed finial that contains a niche with a statue. A wood door is set within a 4-centred archway, also featuring a rectangular dripmould. To the left, there is a stepped rusticated buttress, and the building has a plinth. The roof is made of stone slate with red ridge tiles. The Warden's House is part of a group that includes No 1, railings and terrace to No 1, No 2, wall and gates to No 2, Nos 3, 4, Warden's House to No 4, and Nos 5 to 11 consecutively.
