Description

Templars Hall is a 13th or 14th century timber-framed, three-bay aisled hall, with a 15th century west cross wing, all encased in 19th century red brick. The building features a tiled roof with a 16th century stone chimneystack and a rebuilt red brick shaft. It is one storey with attics and two storeys on the west side. The windows are leaded casements with gabled dormers.

Inside, the west wing has a lower chamber with a timbered ceiling adorned with carved heraldic bosses. The upper chamber contains two roof trusses; one has carved braces and king and queen posts, while the other features pointed arches formed by curved wind braces supporting purlins. Fluted oak pilasters flank a 17th century moulded stone chimneypiece on the ground floor, and there is a 16th century moulded stone fireplace on the first floor.

Historically, Templars Hall was likely either a bailiff's house or part of the Preceptory or Commandery of the Knights. It is part of a group that includes the Church of Saint Mary, the North East Range, the South West Range, the Entrance Gateway, and the side walls at the Lady Katherine Leveson Hospital, Vicarage, and Temple House.
