Description

The Church of St Mary was built around 1290 for the Knights Templars and was later used by the Knights Hospitallers until 1540. It underwent restoration in the 1660s and served as a chapel for the nearby almshouses from 1677. It became a parish church in 1863 and was significantly restored in the late 13th century style by Sir George Gilbert Scott in 1849. The church has a rectangular plan with a small turret at the southwest corner and fragmentary remains of fan vaulting in the south porch. Inside, there are steps leading up to the east end, 19th-century fittings, and seating arranged in a college chapel style. The interior also features 18th and early 19th-century wall monuments, a piscina, sedilia, and an aumbry recess. The church is part of a group that includes the Church of Saint Mary, Templars Hall, the North East Range, the South West Range, the Entrance Gateway, and the side walls at the Lady Katherine Leveson Hospital, as well as the Vicarage and Temple House.
