Description

The Pillbox at Bromholm Priory is a World War II Type 22 pillbox. It is constructed from brick and concrete, faced with flint and features dressings of handmade red brick.

Located at the south-west corner of Abbey Farm garden, the pillbox has a hexagonal plan and abuts the garden wall. This single-storey structure has a flat concrete roof and concrete lintels. The 20th-century brick walls are faced with flint rubble and have quoins made of handmade red brick. Each side of the pillbox includes a gun embrasure. Originally, the design may have featured a pitched roof to resemble a garden building or summerhouse, but the flint rubble is now crumbling. Over the entrance, there is a two-pointed relieving arch in handmade red brick, and on the opposite side, remnants of another arch can be seen above the gun embrasure, which gave the impression of a window surround.

Inside, there is a thick concrete blast wall positioned centrally within the pillbox. Beneath each gun embrasure, there are supports for a shelf or ledge for resting while firing a rifle or light machine gun.

On the west side of the pillbox, there is the base of a spigot mortar, which has been displaced from its usual position in a pit and surrounded by ammunition lockers. The spigot mortar is not considered of special architectural or historic interest and is not included in the listing, but it is protected as part of the scheduling of the priory.
