Description

This is a World War Two pillbox built around 1940-1941. It is made of orange brick, reinforced concrete, and millstone grit stone.

The pillbox has a rectangular shape and features three embrasures in the south wall, which overlooks the A62 (Huddersfield Road). There are two embrasures in the north wall and two in each of the side walls, with a doorway located in the west wall.

Situated on a hillside, the pillbox is positioned on the north side of a rough track that connects Huddersfield Road below with Standedge Foot Road above. It extends forward from a dry stone wall that borders the field to the north of the track. The exterior is clad in roughly-coursed dry stone walling and has a grassed earth covering on the roof.

The south wall features three narrow-splayed embrasures designed for rifles or light machine guns. The west side wall has two similar embrasures and a low doorway with a concrete lintel, leading to an overgrown narrow entrance passage that cuts into the hillside. The north wall also has two embrasures, as does the east side wall.

Inside, the pillbox has a concrete floor and brick walls that are thicker beneath the embrasures, forming a continuous narrow brick shelf. Above the embrasures, there is a deep concrete wall plate supporting concrete beams that run from the front to the rear, forming the roof.
