Description

This structure is a First World War pillbox built in 1917, accompanied by a row of Second World War anti-tank cubes constructed around 1940. The pillbox is made of in-situ poured reinforced concrete and has a trapezoidal plan.

Located below the crest of the eastern slope of the sea bank at Sea Farm, Saltfleetby, the northwest and southeast elevations each feature a single, low-set, wide-splayed machine gun embrasure that is partially hidden by slumping ground. Only the top of an off-set doorway in the rear elevation is visible. The roof is designed with irregular lumps of concrete to break up the outline of the structure, and it includes a blocked circular vent and two threaded holdfast bolts. The exterior has a relatively smooth surface, created using timber shuttering during casting.

Inside, the pillbox is now mostly filled with sand. The walls have smooth whitewashed concrete surfaces, with visible horizontal plank shuttering marks and a timber batten on the northeast wall.

Additionally, there is a row of Second World War anti-tank cubes located approximately 50 meters to the southeast, intended to obstruct the exit off the foreshore. These concrete cubes, measuring about 5 feet (1.5 meters) each, are set corner-on (diamond set) in the direction of the anticipated attack. They are not mapped due to difficulties in surveying the area.
