Description

Central Cinema is a Grade II listed building located in Fakenham Market Place, dating back to 1855. Originally a corn hall, it is a large brick structure with stuccoed dressings. The building features a parapet and a heavy cornice supported by paired brackets, along with a decorative band. Its rounded corners are accentuated with brick quoins, and it is situated on an island site.

The east front is faced in roughcast and consists of two storeys with five windows, although the central first-floor window is blocked. The tall sash windows do not have glazing bars and are framed by plain architraves with keyblocks and cills resting on small brackets. The central doorway is flanked by round-headed doorways at each rounded corner, which have keyblocks and semi-circular tracered fanlights topped with cornices on console brackets.

The side elevations, to the north and south, extend further out and also feature rounded corners made of rusticated brickwork. Each side has a pair of large round-headed windows with keyblocks and rectangular panels above them. The north side includes a projecting pilastered doorway with an entablature.

The rear elevation, facing west, has rounded corners with rusticated brickwork and is a single storey with a layout of 1:3:1 bays, where the central three bays project slightly. It has large round-headed windows with keyblocks and brick aprons, along with rectangular panels above and a continuous impost. A rusticated plinth and band are present at floor level, although this elevation is partially obscured by an iron fire escape.
