Description
The Grange is a Grade II* listed building located on St Peter's Street, dating from the late 18th century. This two-storey structure features five windows on the street front and seven on the south return. It is constructed of brown brick with red brick dressings and has a wooden modillion cornice beneath a brick parapet. The south front includes two canted bays, each with three windows, and a Venetian window situated between the bays on the first floor. The renewed sash windows are adorned with gauged, flat brick arches and are set in near-flush frames.
The central doorcase on the street front is notable for its attached Ionic columns that support an entablature featuring modillions and dentils, along with an open pediment that has a similar cornice. The door itself has panelled reveals, a dentil cornice head, and a decorative fanlight.
Inside, the building boasts a staircase with slender, turned balusters arranged three to a tread and a cut string. There are three carved fireplaces—two made of wood and one of marble. The windows and shutters, as well as the doors with six fielded panels, feature carved enrichment. Several rooms display plaster work in the Adam style.
