Description

Alderfen Cottage is an early 18th-century house located on the west side of Neatishead Common Road. Originally a one-storey, five-bay building with an attic, it is constructed of brick with a thatched roof. The central door is in a 20th-century brick doorcase featuring pilasters, an abacus, and a segmental pediment. Four two-light timber casement windows from the early 18th century are present, one being partly renewed with leaded glass. Deeply curved skewback arches rise to a moulded platband. Rusticated brick quoins are located at the corners. The gabled roof has internal end stacks. The original gables were shaped but are now mostly straight, except for the east slope of the south gable which retains its original shape. A moulded platband to the south gable is now obscured by a late 18th-century, single-storey hipped extension built of brick and thatched.
