Description
No. 53 High Street is a building from the 16th to 17th century, with an early 18th-century front. The ground floor is made of painted brick, while the upper part is stuccoed, featuring chamfered quoins and a moulded string course at floor level. It has a modillion eaves cornice with dentils and a steep gable-ended roof covered with black-glazed pantiles. The building has two storeys and three windows, which are sashes in exposed cases with original thick glazing bars. The doorway is off centre to the left, with fielded panel reveals and a fielded panel and glazed door. A brick chimney stack is located at the north end. Inside, there is a moulded beam from the 16th or 17th century. The good front room on the ground floor is early 18th century, panelled, and has a cornice; the fireplace features a shouldered architrave with a round-headed niche on one side and a panelled cupboard on the other side. At the rear, there are two small gabled wings that are plastered and contain some timber framing.
