Description
Maytyr House, located at 49 High Street in Little Walsingham, is a 16th-century timber-framed building with a striking 18th-century red brick front. The façade features a parapet, a moulded brick modillion cornice, and a moulded brick string course. The house has two storeys and an attic, arranged in a 1:3:1 bay configuration, with the center bay slightly projecting and topped with a pediment that contains an elliptical light. The windows are sashes with glazing bars set in exposed casings, and three of the ground floor sashes retain their original thick glazing bars, all with flat brick arches above them. The central doorway is adorned with a moulded architrave and entablature, complete with a modillion cornice, and features fielded panel reveals and a fielded-panel door. The roof is steeply gabled and covered with pantiles, and there is a large brick chimney stack at the north end.
Inside, the timber-framing is exposed, showcasing a crown post roof truss with arched braces. At the rear, there is a notable early 18th-century wing that has a Dutch gable end and sashes with glazing bars. The interior includes a very fine ground floor room with fielded panelling. Flanking the chimneypiece are tall arched cupboards topped with shells, keyblocks, and fielded panel doors. There is also a large round-arched entrance doorway featuring fluted pilasters, an entablature, and panelled reveals.
