Description

The greenhouse located 150 metres north-west of Hoveton Hall is a Grade II* listed glasshouse built around 1809 to 1812, with an extension added in the early 20th century. The original structure was likely designed by Humphrey and John Adey Repton, while the extension was created by Messenger and Co. of Loughborough.

The original section features rolled wrought iron, cast iron, and glass, supported by a brick wall with bothies behind. It has a lean-to design that curves downwards on either side and extends to the rear at full height to hide the bothies. The front extension has resulted in a T-plan layout. The original part includes a brick plinth and glazed gable ends with a Gothic-arch part-glazed door. It has small panes of glass set in fine glazing bars, with similar windows on the front of the lean-to. The roof is made of Gothic-style openwork iron rafters arranged in two panels, bolted together and fixed to the rear wall, featuring small cast-iron head corbels.

Inside, there are brick raised beds and shelves. This glasshouse is particularly significant as an early example of the use of rolled wrought iron in greenhouse construction and is of additional interest as it was built around the same time as Hoveton Hall, likely by the same architects.
