Description

This is a greenhouse built around 1830, located 120 metres east of Felton Park, which includes a potting shed at the rear. The greenhouse incorporates an 18th-century garden wall made of brick with stone dressings. The structure features a cast-iron and glass design on an ashlar base, with a brick plinth on the eastern part.

The front wall of the greenhouse is low and has 30 bays with a boldly convex pent roof. The glazing consists of vertical panels, including fishscale pieces of opaque glass, and there is a permanent iron ladder in the center. The upper wall has two rows of nine grilled vents. The left side has vertical strips of small square panes and a half-glazed iron door with fishscale glazing, while the right side has an inserted boarded double door.

At the rear, the potting shed has a pent roof and features five 12-pane Yorkshire sash windows, along with a boarded door on each side.

Inside, the greenhouse has a central division wall with a door similar to the one on the left side. Each section contains a four-bay axial arcade supported by slender iron columns. The plastered rear wall has vents at the roof level, which are closed by pivoting iron shutters that use a counterweight mechanism.

The brick plinth indicates that the eastern half of the greenhouse may be slightly older, although both sections are otherwise identical. This greenhouse is similar in form to the conservatory built in 1825 at Beetham, designed by Webster of Kendal, and is noted as an unusually early and well-preserved example.
