Description
These mid-19th century gas works buildings are located at Gas Works Farm in Felton. The complex comprises a retort house with an attached outbuilding range to the south.
The retort house is a single-story, two-bay structure built of squared stone with cut dressings and brick buttresses, and has a Welsh slate roof. The east elevation features a central round-arched doorway, a semicircular window to the right with iron-framed radial glazing within a stone surround and slightly-projecting sill, and a stable door with a four-pane overlight to the left. A broad raking buttress is located at the left end. The building has coped gables, and a broad square stack projects from the left return, although the brick upper part has since been removed, leaving it terminating slightly above the roof ridge. To the left is a lower, four-bay outbuilding range, the former arcade of round arches having been altered except for a blocked arch at the right end. It has a coped gable at the left end. The rear elevation, facing the road, displays two iron-framed semicircular windows, with a cemented-over roundel positioned between them.
The interior of the retort house has a roof structure entirely composed of iron rods, designed to reduce the risk of fire.
This represents a rare example of a small, rural gasworks. The outbuilding range, which was in poor condition at the time of survey, is included in the listing for group value.
