Description

Peth Foot is a house dated 1617, which incorporates earlier fabric and was remodeled and extended in the 19th century. It is constructed of rubble with a rendered front and features brick with stone dressings on the rear wing, topped by a slate roof. The front of the house is two storeys high and has five irregular bays. In the second bay, there is an old door made of diagonally-set oak boards, set under a flat-pointed arch within a square frame, and adorned with a stepped hoodmould. Above the door is a sunk panel in a moulded surround, which bears an inscription: "ANNO DOMINI 1617 PRO(VERBS 24) VER(SE 3) THR(OUGH) WISD OM (IS A) HOV SE BVILDED (AN) (D) WITH (UNDE)R DING STAN (I)T IS ESTABLISHED," with the last two lines carved on the door lintel. The house features late 19th-century sash windows within cement surrounds and has rendered ridge and end stacks. The left side of the house shows a first-floor opening that is now glazed but may have originally been a door, complete with a chamfered surround and hoodmould. There is an early 19th-century wing on the left. The rear elevation includes a round-headed stair window with radial glazing and a former two-light mullioned window, situated above the roof of a later outshut. Inside, the south end wall measures 2.6 meters thick, and there is an internal cross wall of similar thickness on the north side of the entrance passage, suggesting the presence of a medieval tower. A blocked chamfered door is located on the south side of the entrance passage. The mid-18th-century stair features a panelled newel post, a moulded grip handrail, and column-on-vase balusters, with a similar balustrade at the stair head.
