Description

New Felton Bridge is a beam slab road bridge built in 1926-7 by Considere Constructions Ltd, with consulting engineers Mr J H Bean, County Surveyor, and builders Messrs E Henderson & Son. The bridge is constructed from reinforced concrete with cast and wrought iron. It has three river spans, measuring 11.9m, 14.3m, and 15.4m, for a total length of approximately 41.6m. The south half of the bridge is curved, with the road platform super elevated to match. The beams and platforms are continuous from abutment to abutment, supported by two trestles, with flexible columns at the abutments containing an expansion joint. The carriageway is 9.1m wide, flanked by footpaths 1.8m wide. The bridge features a wrought iron railing incorporating cast iron mirror vase balusters and art deco style cast iron parapets with a 1920s swag design in relief, rising above each of the five bridge piers.

Considere Constructions Ltd were significant bridge engineers, responsible for the Grade B listed George V Bridge in Glasgow. Like many bridges built between the wars, New Felton Bridge was designed to resemble a traditional masonry, multi-span, shallow arch bridge, but it is structurally a continuous reinforced concrete beam bridge with roller bearings. It is considered more structurally honest than some contemporary bridges, as its design and structure are readily visible.

The bridge has constructional interest as one of the earliest surviving bridges built by Considere Constructions Ltd in England, and as a pioneer of a successful bridge type still commonly used for small and medium spans. It also displays architectural quality in its smooth concrete finish and the wrought iron balustrade and art deco pilasters. The bridge has group value with a Grade II* listed and Scheduled Ancient Monument, the Felton Old Bridge, and other listed buildings clustered around the bridge head. It is well preserved and compares favorably with other listed bridges of similar construction and date.
